Woodmen of the world - Assured Life association

Summer Camp Grant Program

Helping our youth is important to our members....and that makes it important to Woodmen of the World and/or Assured Life Association!

The Society sets aside monies to provide individual Summer Camp Grants for youth with a membership connection – members, children or grandchildren of members – or youth with a connection through a camp/lodge or volunteer activity such as Join Hands Day.  Summer Camp Grant amounts vary depending upon the number of eligible applications received; the maximum award is $100.  We believe that the camping experience and the growth it fosters in our youth is a value that our membership finds worthwhile.

Below is a picture shared by 13 year-old 2011 camp grant recipient, Carson Taekker of Eugene, Oregon, while attending Camp Noyo near Fort Bragg in California.

Here is what Carson had to say about his experience.

Thank you so much for giving me a grant to summer camp. You really helped me in my boy scouting career. The summer camp I went to was extraordinary.

We went down to California, near Fort Bragg. When we stopped in Fort Bragg we took the “Skunk Train” through the red woods and into our camp. The camp was called Camp Noyo. Our troop camped in the camp sites, Burbeck, and Clarmill. Believe it or not our troop was the biggest there.

The camp was split in two by the Noyo River. The only way to cross the river was by an old suspension bridge (shown above). Every time I crossed the bridge it shook, and squeaked. It felt like it was going to break every time I crossed. Since everything was across the river we had to cross it several times a day.

Across the river were the mess hall, our merit badge classes, and all the other events. They fed us lunch every day, and provided food for us to cook breakfast and dinner. The classes I took were Emergency Preparedness, Railroading, Camping, and Nature. I learned many things, and had a great time at camp.

Sincerely,
Carson Taekker,
Star Scout, Troop 22
