Project Ideas and Opportunities

In addition to our educational focus we’ve highlighted a few programs and projects here that we support as quality volunteer opportunities.

Ongoing Events and Nationally Recognized Days of Service

Join Hands Day
Uniting Youth and Adults
WOW/ALA is a very active (and award-winning!) participant in Join Hands Day, the only national volunteer day on America’s calendar that focuses on youth and adult partnership volunteering. The event was developed by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies, in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network, to mobilize volunteers to create new partnerships that break down the generational divide and result in improved communities. Youth and adults work together to plan, organize and implement volunteer activities in their community. Through their participant kit, JHD has made it easy for anyone to start a JHD project. Visit their website at www.joinhandsday.org for more information and help bridge the gap between youth and adults in your community!

Take Pride in America
The Take Pride in America Initiative is a national campaign to encourage Federal, state, and local public and private partnerships and volunteer service to protect public parks, recreation areas, and cultural resources. Its primary focus will be to encourage citizen stewards to dedicate time and service to help protect and restore resources and facilities in their area. You can become a part of the Take Pride in America Initiative right in your own community! Visit their website at www.takepride.gov to find your state coordinator and learn about projects.

National Family Volunteer Day logoNational Family Volunteer Day
Part of the Points of Light Foundation’s Seasons of Service, National Family Volunteer Day is designed to showcase the benefits of families working together, to introduce community service, and encourage those who haven’t yet made the commitment to volunteer as a family. National Family Volunteer Day is held the Saturday before Thanksgiving and kicks off National Family Week. To learn more about National Family Week, November 20-26, please visit their website at http://www.nationalfamilyweek.org/. For more information on how to participate in NFVD and become eligible for National Awards as a volunteering family, visit http://www.pointsoflight.org/programs/seasons/nfvd/.

Points of Light Foundation LogoStart Your Own Project!
There are an abundance of ideas for projects that you can do on your own or with your family and/or friends, right in your own community from the Points of Light Foundation. For more information or ideas from Points of Light, visit their website at
http://www.pointsoflight.org.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America
Offers a variety of volunteer opportunities and programs for you to impact youth at-risk. Research and anecdotal evidence show specifically that BBBS one-to-one mentoring helps at-risk youth overcome the many challenges they face. Little Brothers and Sisters are less likely to begin using illegal drugs, consume alcohol, skip school and classes, or engage in acts of violence. They have greater self-esteem, confidence in their schoolwork performance, and are able to get along better with their friends and families. For more information or to apply to become a volunteer in your local community, visit http://www.bbbsa.org.

Senior Corps LogoSenior Corps
Senior Corps is a network of programs that tap the experience, skills, and talents of older citizens to meet community challenges. Through its three programs - Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and RSVP (the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) - more than half a million Americans age 55 and over assist local nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations in carrying out their missions. Senior Corps, part of the USA Freedom Corps , is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service , the federal agency that also oversees AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America . Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year.

RSVP
RSVP (the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) , one of the largest volunteer efforts in the nation, engages people 55 and over in a diverse range of volunteer activities. Volunteers organize neighborhood watch programs, tutor children, renovate homes, teach English to immigrants, assist victims of natural disasters, and serve their communities in myriad other ways. In fiscal year 2001, approximately 480,000 volunteers served an average of four hours a week at an estimated 65,000 local organizations through 766 RSVP projects. Volunteers may receive reimbursement for meals and transportation.

For more information on Senior Corps initiatives or to find out about opportunities through your local RSVP, visit www.seniorcorps.org or go directly to their online database of project opportunities throughout the nation at https://www.joinseniorservice.org/framework.asp.
